Madang's wharf is centrally located, just 500 meters from the Madang Resort and Kalibobo Village Resort. Expect large crowds watching your ship arrive, as cruise calls are rare here. There are no dedicated tourist facilities directly at the pier, though local vendors may be selling unique wares.
Once called the "prettiest town in the South Pacific" due to its peninsula setting, parks, waterways, and tropical islands, Madang today shows signs of wear, with some faded areas, litter, and roads in disrepair. Despite this, it offers modern urban facilities like hotels, markets, and shops. The region is renowned for its world-class diving, featuring abundant coral reefs, excellent visibility, numerous reef fish, dramatic drop-offs, and many sunken ships and aircraft for wreck enthusiasts. Game fishing is also popular, with sailfish, tuna, marlin, and other species found within 100 meters of the shore.
Getting Around from the Port
The cruise wharf is in the center of Madang. The Madang Resort and Kalibobo Village Resort are conveniently located just 500 meters away, making them easily walkable from the pier.
Independent travel beyond the immediate town center is challenging due to limited infrastructure. Papua New Guinea has very few paved roads, and there are no major highways connecting Madang to other cities like Port Moresby. While a tenuous highway theoretically links Madang to Wewak, road conditions are generally poor. Cruise lines strongly recommend passengers stick to organized shore excursions for safety and logistical reasons; be aware that vehicles used for these tours may not always be the most comfortable.
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, here are some options:
- Explore Madang Town (Walkable): Wander through the town's parks, waterways, and local markets. While some areas are faded, you'll find modern facilities, department stores, and artefact shops.
- Visit Madang Resort (Walkable, 500m): This gated resort often hosts cruise excursions featuring traditional musical and dancing pageants. It also offers an internet cafe where you can connect for 1 Kina per minute.
- Diving & Snorkeling (Organized Tour): Madang is world-famous for its coral reefs, excellent visibility, and numerous WWII wrecks. Many hotels in Madang offer diving instruction and excursions to various dive sites, including land-based options, reefs, and dramatic drop-offs.
- Game Fishing (Organized Tour): The coastal currents just 100 meters offshore are rich with sailfish, kingfish, tuna, barracuda, and marlin. Fishing is particularly good around Karkar and Bagabag Islands.
- Village Tours (Organized Tour): Arrange a visit to nearby villages like Bilbil and Yabob to witness the traditional craft of clay pot making.
- Madang Harbor Cruise (Organized Tour): Take a morning cruise to explore the picturesque Madang harbor and its surrounding islands.
- Balek Wildlife Sanctuary (Organized Tour, South Coast Road): Journey to this sanctuary known for its unique fish-filled sulphurous caves, jungle walks, and hot springs. This location was also used for filming scenes in the Pierce Brosnan movie "Robinson Crusoe."
- Volcanic Islands (Organized Tour): Offshore from Bogia, two volcanic islands boast cones rising 1,800 meters above sea level, offering a spectacular sight.
Shopping
Local markets are excellent places to find unique souvenirs, including artefacts, shell jewelry, carvings, and pottery. Madang's main streets (there are about four of them) feature supermarkets and larger stores, serving residents from outlying islands who come to shop.
Dining
While no specific restaurants are highlighted near the pier, the town's modern urban facilities suggest various dining options, including hotels and local eateries, where you can sample local specialties.
Safety
While Madang is known for its natural beauty, the town can appear somewhat faded with litter and roads in disrepair. Papua New Guinea's tropical conditions, challenging geography, and limited government capacity mean travel can be complex. Cruise lines often advise passengers to participate in organized shore excursions. If exploring independently, especially beyond the immediate walkable area around the port, it's prudent to be aware of your surroundings and consult with local advice.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK). While credit card acceptance may vary, especially at smaller vendors and markets, major hotels and larger stores might accept them. It's advisable to carry local currency for smaller purchases and transactions. English is an official language and is widely spoken, along with Tok Pisin and Hiri Motu.
